Capoeira is an art of freedom invented by enslaved African people in Brazil, against occupiers and colonizers.

Capoeira includes music, games, fighting, dance, and philosophy.

Portuguese colonizers forbade Africans from writing and speaking their own language during 400 years of slavery.

African people (mainly from modern-day Angola, Congo, and Nigeria) used capoeira to preserve their culture and traditions.

Today, capoeira is a powerful weapon against repressors and colonizers.

Giorgi was born in Tbilisi and raised in New York, but he often returned to Georgia and always had a strong connection to his homeland.

He learned Capoeira Angola in America and has 7 years of practice experience.

“Capoeira may be foreign to our culture with its long history, but its foundation, which is based on freedom, appreciation of ancestors, music, dance, and fighting, is very similar to our culture.

By learning capoeira, we will see our culture from a new perspective and be filled with new energy that will help us in the fight for freedom.”
